I was reading Braving The Wilderness by Brene’ Brown when I read something the quote below. It’s related to the blog I recently wrote Relationships: Fear vs Vulnerability. She says, “Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, joy, trust, intimacy, courage – everything that bring meaning to ur life”. It reminded me of William Faulkner’s famous quote, “You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore”.
Vulnerability, the very thing we are most afraid of is where we truly begin to live. She explains that we often live life with protective armour after trauma because we learn that being vulnerable is dangerous and can cause us pain.
How do we live this paradoxical situation. How do we let our guard down, get past fear, become vulnerable and begin to be courageous and trust? How do we leave the protective shore to find new adventures? Trust is believing in the truth of someone else. It’s believing in their strength, their integrity, their ability to protect us. Finding people we can trust this much is a rare blessing. Hold onto those individuals. However, to attach ourselves to such people, we too have to live lives of strength and integrity.
My trust, strength and courage is grounded in my faith in my Heavenly Father. I know throughout my own journey, I have had to find courage I never knew existed. That strength is continually renewed through prayer, meditation, and reading God’s word. I have had to reach deep down more than once. God is continually calling me out of my comfort zone, away from the shore, into the ocean and wilderness.
How are you being called to trust? Where is your new horizon or wilderness? Its where we experience “everything that brings meaning to our life” (Brown).
May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my HOPE, Lord, is in you. Psalms 25:21
I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. Philippians 1:20
